Brașov's five best-known historic buildings sit on a loop of about **1.7 km** that takes **35–40 minutes** to walk. Only the Council House (**12 lei**) and the Black Church (**30 lei**) charge entry; the gate and both towers are free from outside. With both interiors, allow **2½–3 hours**.

## The route at a glance

Start in Piața Sfatului and finish there. The five stops are the Council House, the Black Church, Catherine's Gate, the Black Tower and the White Tower. Entry prices were checked on 10 October 2026. Walking times between stops are measured on the map and rounded up; the two climbs to the towers are short but steep.

| Stop | What it is | Entry (2026) | Walk to the next stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Council House (Casa Sfatului) | Old town hall, now the County History Museum | 12 lei, Tue–Sun 10:00–18:00 | 3 min |
| 2. Black Church | Gothic parish church | 30 lei, daily (from 12:00 Sun–Mon) | 8 min along Strada Poarta Schei |
| 3. Catherine's Gate (Poarta Ecaterina) | Medieval city gate (1559) | Free (outside) | 6–8 min, partly uphill |
| 4. Black Tower (Turnul Negru) | Watchtower on a rock above the western wall | Free (outside) | 10 min, down and up again |
| 5. White Tower (Turnul Alb) | Semicircular tower on the hillside | Free (outside) | 5 min back to the square |

**Best days:** Tuesday to Saturday. On Mondays the Council House is closed, and on Sundays and Mondays the Black Church only opens at 12:00, so on those days walk the outdoor half (gate and towers) in the morning and go inside after lunch.

**Is it worth it?** Yes if it's your first day in Brașov: you see the medieval core in one morning and get the best view of the Old Town from the White Tower. If you've already been inside the Black Church or prefer outdoor walks, the gate-and-towers half on its own takes about 30 minutes and costs nothing.

## 1. The Council House (Casa Sfatului)

The old town hall stands in the middle of Piața Sfatului. A room for the town magistrates above the furriers' guild vault is mentioned in 1420, and the tower was built between 1521 and 1528. In the early 1600s it was called the Trumpeters' Tower, after the guard who sounded a trumpet every hour.

The Great Fire of 1689 damaged the building and part of the town archive; the onion-shaped roof and the city coat of arms were added in a major restoration in 1770–1778, and the present black-and-yellow tiled roof dates from 1909–1910. The council moved out in the 19th century, and since 1950 the building has housed the museum.

**Visiting:** the Brașov County History Museum shows its permanent exhibition and temporary shows here.

## 2. The Black Church

Walk a minute south-west across the square to the Black Church, Brașov's Gothic parish church, begun at the end of the 14th century and rebuilt after the fire of 1689. Inside are the 3,993-pipe Buchholz organ from 1836–1839 and around 200 carpets and textiles, mostly Ottoman rugs.

- **Hours:** 16 October–31 March, Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–18:00, Sunday–Monday 12:00–18:00; 1 April–15 October, closing at 19:00
- **Tickets:** adults 30 lei, students and pensioners 25 lei, pupils 20 lei, free under 7
- **Time needed:** 45 minutes to an hour

## 3. Catherine's Gate (Poarta Ecaterina)

From the church, walk south along Strada Poarta Schei to Catherine's Gate on the south-western edge of the old town. **Strada Sforii**, one of the narrowest streets in the city, is on the way, but it has been closed for repairs since November 2025, according to [BizBrașov](https://bizbrasov.ro/2026/09/24/simbol-brasov-santier-strada-sforii/).

The Tailors' Guild built the gate in 1559 to replace an older gate destroyed by a flood in 1526. The four small corner turrets around the spire were a sign that the town had its own judicial autonomy, including the *ius gladii*, the right to pass death sentences.

Only the central tower survives; the original gate was larger, and a wooden structure belonging to it was demolished in 1827. The Șchei Gate next to it, built in the 19th century, took over as the way in from Șchei. You can see what the full gate looked like on the scale model of medieval Brașov in the Weavers' Bastion.

**Visiting:** the gate is free to see from outside at any time. Beyond it lies Șchei, the old Romanian quarter, with St Nicholas Church and the First Romanian School.

## 4. The Black Tower (Turnul Negru)

From the gate, follow **Strada După Ziduri** ("Behind the Walls") north, the lane that runs along the outside of the western wall. The Black Tower stands on a rock above it.

It was built around 1460 as a watchtower outside the wall, once linked to the fortifications by a movable bridge. On 23 July 1559 lightning set it on fire and blackened its walls, which is where its name comes from; the 1559 date is given by the [Romanian Wikipedia entry](https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turnul_Negru_din_Bra%C8%99ov) and repeated in local tourism coverage.

During the 1993–1995 restoration the soot was cleaned off and the tower received its pyramid-shaped glass roof. It opened in 2001 with a small exhibition on the towers in Brașov's medieval defences.

**Visiting:** you can walk up to the tower for free for the view over the Black Church's roof. There are no confirmed 2026 opening hours or interior price, so treat the inside as a bonus if you find it open.

*The Black Tower's glass roof was added in the 1990s restoration.*

## 5. The White Tower (Turnul Alb)

Go back down to Strada După Ziduri and follow it north along the wall to the **Graft Bastion**, where the Graft stream runs between the wall and the hill. From here a long, steep flight of steps leads up to the White Tower.

The semicircular tower was built in the second half of the 15th century; sources give dates between 1460 and 1494. It was defended by the tinsmiths' and coppersmiths' guilds. Its door is about 5 metres above the ground and was reached by a movable stair, which is why there is a wooden platform and staircase in front of it today. The tower became a branch of the County History Museum, which has held occasional exhibitions inside.

**Visiting:** the climb is free and gives the best view of the route you've just walked: the Council House tower, the Black Church roof and Tâmpa behind them. In the late afternoon the sun is behind you as you look across the town. From the tower, the steps take you back down to the Graft and Piața Sfatului in about five minutes.

*The White Tower's door sits high above the ground; today it is reached by a wooden stair.*

## Add-ons along the way

- **Weavers' Bastion (Bastionul Țesătorilor), Strada George Coșbuc 9.** The linen weavers' guild bastion, about ten minutes' walk south of Piața Sfatului. Inside is the 1896 scale model of medieval Brașov. Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, adults 10 lei.
- **Aleea de sub Tâmpa.** The flat promenade outside the eastern wall starts by the Weavers' Bastion; see our guide to [walks and easy hikes in Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/6-ideal-places-for-taking-a-walk-in-brasov).
- **Combined ticket.** The Brașov Visit Ticket (57.76 lei for adults, valid 90 days) includes the Black Church, the History Museum and the Weavers' Bastion, plus nine other sites. On this route alone it costs more than the two tickets (42 lei), so it only pays off if you add several museums.

## Tips

- **Wear shoes with grip.** The streets are cobbled, and both towers are reached by steep steps that get slippery in rain and frost.
- **Do the towers in daylight.** The paths up to them are on wooded slopes outside the walls.
- **Start at 10:00 from Tuesday to Saturday**, when both the Council House and the Black Church open.
