February is still winter in Brașov, with a little more sun than January: afternoons average **7°C**, nights about **−3°C**, and snow falls on about 5 days. It's a good month for skiing at Poiana Brașov, especially in the first two weeks. In 2027 the city hosts the **European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOF) from 14 to 21 February**, and the week after that is the school ski holiday for Bucharest and, most likely, Brașov, so the second half of the month is the busiest time of the winter on the slopes. There are no public holidays, and Seven Ladders Canyon stays closed until spring.

## Weather in February

These are the averages for the Brașov-Ghimbav weather station, 2015–2025, from the table in our [Brașov weather and seasons guide](https://wowbrasov.com/en/the-weather-and-seasons-in-brasov):

| | February |
|---|---|
| Average high | 7°C (44°F) |
| Average low | −3°C (26°F) |
| Rain or snow | about 23 mm on 5 days |
| Days with snowfall | about 5 |
| Nights below 0°C | about 21 |
| Daylight | 9 h 47 min on 1 February, 11 h 07 min on 28 February |
| Sunrise / sunset | 07:38 / 17:25 on 1 February; 06:57 / 18:04 on 28 February |

Sunrise and sunset times are from [sunrise-sunset.org](https://sunrise-sunset.org/).

What that means on the ground: mostly dry days with more sun than in January, and frost on about three nights out of four. Snow falls less often than in January, but cold spells are still common: the station recorded −25.4°C in February 2023. Expect slush on thaw days and ice on the pavements in the morning. Poiana Brașov leans on snowmaking in warm winters; in 2025/26 more than 90% of the snow on its slopes was artificial. In the mountains it is roughly 6°C colder for every 1,000 m you climb.

## Events in February

- **European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOF), 14–21 February 2027.** Brașov hosts the winter edition of Europe's Olympic festival for young athletes for the second time, after 2013 ([Brașov City Hall, 16 September 2026](https://evenimente.brasovcity.ro/noutati-pe-larg/37442/x)). Events are spread over Brașov, Poiana Brașov, Predeal, Râșnov, Fundata, Sfântu Gheorghe and Târgu Secuiesc, with athletes' villages at Poiana Brașov and Cheile Grădiștei. The sports include alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, biathlon, ski mountaineering, ice hockey, figure skating and short track ([organisers' venue overview, via the Ukrainian Olympic Committee](https://noc-ukr.org/en/news/de-zhitimut-ta-zmagatimutsya-uchasniki-ye-yu-of-2027-oglyad-lokaczij-festivalyu)). When we checked, the race schedule and spectator information hadn't been published.
- **Ski season at Poiana Brașov.** February is usually one of the two most reliable months. Last season the main lifts ran 09:00–16:00, and the floodlit Bradul slope opened for night skiing at weekends. See our [guide to skiing near Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/skiing-near-brasov).
- **Mărțișor fair.** At the turn of February and March, stalls in Piața Sfatului sell *mărțișoare*, the red-and-white tokens Romanians give on 1 March. In 2026 the fair ran from 27 February to 1 March ([Brașov County Council fair calendar, PDF](https://cjbrasov.ro/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Calendar-piete-targuri-si-oboare-jud-Brasov-2026.pdf)); the 2027 dates aren't out yet.
- **Public holidays:** none in February, so shops, museums and offices keep their normal hours all month.

Our [What's on in Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/whats-on-in-brasov) page lists one-off concerts, opera and theatre for the current month.

## What's open and what's closed

- **Ski lifts at Poiana Brașov:** open, snow permitting. City Hall publishes the [slope and lift status](https://www.brasovcity.ro/vino-la-ski/starea-partiilor-si-a-instalatiilor) every day.
- **Black Church:** winter hours, Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–18:00 and Sunday and Monday 12:00–18:00. See our [Black Church guide](https://wowbrasov.com/en/discover-the-black-church-in-brasov).
- **Museums:** the Museum of Urban Civilization and the Ethnography Museum open Wednesday to Sunday and the Art Museum Tuesday to Sunday, on winter hours (09:00–17:00).

- **Peleș Castle:** open Wednesday to Sunday; closed on Monday and Tuesday.
- **Libearty Bear Sanctuary:** tours Tuesday to Sunday at 09:45 and 11:00; closed on Mondays.
- **Closed for the season:** Seven Ladders Canyon (December to February), the Parc Aventura rope courses (December to February) and the high section of the **Transfăgărășan**, which reopened on 12 June in 2026.

## Best things to do in February

1. **Ski on a weekday in early February,** before EYOF and the school ski week. Bus 20 from Livada Poștei costs a normal 5-lei ticket; last season an adult day pass cost 240 lei.
2. **Watch EYOF.** The alpine skiing is at Poiana Brașov, and Predeal and Râșnov are within an hour of the Old Town by train or bus. Check the organisers' programme in January for venues, times and spectator access.
3. **Sinaia: Peleș in the morning, Cota 2000 in the afternoon.** Sinaia's high slopes are the most likely to have snow in a warm spell, and Peleș is a walk from the town. See our [Peleș Castle guide](https://wowbrasov.com/en/discovering-peles-castle-a-magnificent-romanian-landmark).
4. **Bran Castle out of season,** by bus from Autogara 2; our guide to [getting to Bran Castle from Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/how-to-reach-bran-castle-from-brasov) has the timetable.
5. **A cold-day circuit of the Old Town:** the Black Church, the Council House museum and a hot *ciorbă* or *papanași* afterwards.
6. **The Tâmpa cable car on a clear day,** for the view over the snowy roofs; it runs all year. Our [Brașov city guide](https://wowbrasov.com/en/the-city-of-brasov) covers Tâmpa and the Old Town.

## Crowds and prices

The quiet weeks are at the start of the month. From **14 to 21 February** EYOF brings athletes, officials and delegations from all over Europe to Brașov, and the venues are spread across Poiana Brașov, Predeal and Râșnov, so book a room early if you come that week.

Then comes the school ski holiday. Romanian schools get one free week between 15 February and 7 March 2027, set by each county's inspectorate ([Order 3194/2026, Ministry of Education](https://www.edu.ro/sites/default/files/2026-07/Ordin_3194_2026_structura_an_scolar_2026_2027.pdf)). Bucharest has chosen **22–27 February 2027** ([Edupedu](https://www.edupedu.ro/vacanta-mobila-2027-pentru-elevii-din-bucuresti-este-programata-in-perioada-22-27-februarie-2027-anunta-ismb/)). The school-calendar site [calendarscolar.ro](https://calendarscolar.ro/vacanta-de-schi-2027) puts Brașov in the same week as Bucharest and most other counties, but that is an unofficial listing, not the Brașov inspectorate's decision. Expect the slopes at Poiana, Predeal and Sinaia to be at their busiest that week.

What we can say about prices:

- **Sinaia charges its weekend ski-pass rate during school holidays:** 230 lei for an adult in 2025/26, against 210 lei on weekdays.
- **Peleș is free for under-18s during school holidays,** but the free tickets have to be booked.
- **Brașov residents** got 50% off the Poiana lifts on Wednesdays in 2025/26.

Ski weekends also mean traffic on the DN1 from Bucharest: queues build on Friday afternoons towards Brașov and on Sunday afternoons back. The train avoids them; see our [Bucharest–Brașov guide](https://wowbrasov.com/en/the-best-ways-to-travel-between-bucharest-and-brasov).

Room rates vary with the date, so compare EYOF week and the school ski week with other February dates before you book.

## What to pack

- A warm winter coat, hat and gloves; the nights are still well below freezing.
- Waterproof boots with grip for slush by day and ice in the morning.
- Sunglasses and sun cream for the slopes, where the sun is getting stronger.
- An extra layer for the mountain: the top of Postăvarul (1,799 m) is typically about 8°C colder than the city.
- If you drive, winter tyres: Romanian law requires winter equipment when the road is covered in snow or ice.
