Buy tickets at [bilete.cfrcalatori.ro](https://bilete.cfrcalatori.ro/) or in the CFR Călători app; CFR sells online tickets right up to departure and adds the seat reservation automatically. The Făgăraș Mountains run along the south side of the line, so sit on the left heading towards Sibiu. The timetable changes every December, so check your date in the planner.

## By bus or minibus

Autogari.ro lists about 26 departures a day from Brașov to Sibiu, from 15 operators. On the day we checked, the first daytime departures were at 06:00 and the last at 21:00, plus two overnight runs.

- **Journey time:** daytime departures took **2 h 10 min to 3 h 10 min**, most of them around 2 h 30 min. The fastest scheduled journey was 1 h 59 min, on an overnight minibus leaving at midnight.
- **Fares:** 40–110 lei. The cheapest seats (40–60 lei) were with Cristian Trans, Axi Tours, Romdan Trans and Izvoras.
- **Where they leave from:** the Sala Sporturilor stop on Bulevardul Gării and Autogara 1, both by the train station, and the RATBV bus station on Calea Făgărașului. A few companies pick up at the OMV petrol station on the way out of town towards Sibiu.

## By car

The route is the DN1 (E68) west through Codlea, Făgăraș, Cârța and Avrig: about 143 km, or roughly 2 h 30 min without stops. Most of it is one lane in each direction through villages and towns, so allow extra time at busy times. Expect to pay for parking near Sibiu's historic centre.

The road runs along the wide Olt valley at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains. It does not go through a gorge: the Olt River gorge, the Turnu Roșu–Cozia defile, starts south of Sibiu, on the road to Râmnicu Vâlcea.

### Stops worth making on the way

- **Făgăraș Citadel** (Cetatea Făgărașului), in the centre of Făgăraș, roughly halfway. A moated stone fortress that now houses the Țara Făgărașului Museum. IR trains stop at Făgăraș too.
- **Brâncoveanu Monastery** at Sâmbăta de Sus, a short detour south of the DN1 at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains. A working Orthodox monastery founded by Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu; dress modestly.
- **Cârța Monastery**, the ruins of a 13th-century Cistercian abbey in the village of Cârța, just off the DN1.
- **The Transfăgărășan** (DN7C) leaves the DN1 near Cârțișoara. Its high section over the mountains is only open in summer, so check before you plan a detour.

**Rupea Citadel is not on this route.** It is on the DN13 towards Sighișoara, so combine it with a trip to Sighișoara instead.

Yes, but it is a long day. The best combination is **IR 77 at 08:00**, arriving in Sibiu at 10:50, and **IR 76 at 19:01** back, arriving in Brașov at 21:56. That gives you about eight hours in Sibiu. *Sibiu's Upper Town is compact enough to see in an afternoon.*

With a day in Sibiu, most visitors stay in the Upper Town: Piața Mare and the Brukenthal National Museum, Piața Mică and the Bridge of Lies, Huet Square and the Evangelical Cathedral, then the steps down to the Lower Town. The ASTRA open-air museum is on the southern edge of the city and needs at least half a day of its own.
