Prejmer and Hărman are two Saxon villages north-east of Brașov whose churches sit inside rings of defensive walls. Prejmer, about 18 km away and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, has a ring wall lined with 272 storage rooms on four levels; Hărman, about 12 km away, is smaller and has a tower chapel with 15th-century wall paintings. Both are easy by bus from Brașov's Terminal Gară, line 520 to Prejmer (7 lei, about 30 minutes) and line 511 to Hărman (5 lei, about 20 minutes), and you can see both in half a day.

## Is it worth it? Prejmer or Hărman?

Yes, if you have half a day and any interest in how Transylvania's villages defended themselves. These are among the few places near Brașov where you can walk inside a working defensive complex rather than look at walls from the outside, which matters while Râșnov's hilltop citadel is closed for restoration.

- **Prejmer** is the one to choose if you only have time for one. It is the larger of the two, and the storage rooms built into the wall, stacked four levels high around the church, are what make it different from a castle visit.
- **Hărman** is quieter and quicker to reach. Its draw is the wall paintings in the tower chapel and a complete ring of walls with towers.
- **Skip them** if you are after interiors full of furniture and treasures: these are churches and storerooms, not palaces. For that, [Bran Castle](https://wowbrasov.com/en/bran-castle-unraveling-the-history-and-legends-of-draculas-fortress-in-transylvania) or Peleș is a better fit.

## A short history

From the 12th and 13th centuries, German-speaking settlers, later known as Transylvanian Saxons, farmed the Bârsa plain (Țara Bârsei, Burzenland in German) around Brașov. Prejmer is Tartlau in German and Hărman is Honigberg. The villages lay on the eastern approach to Brașov, and over the following centuries their communities turned their churches into strongholds where everyone could shelter during raids, with food stored in the walls.

**Prejmer.** The town hall dates the start of the church to 1218, under the Teutonic Order, with a Greek-cross plan and later Gothic work by the Cistercians ([Primăria Prejmer](https://primariaprejmer.ro/despre/monumente/)). The fortress around it was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its wall is 12 m high and holds 272 rooms on four levels, used for provisions and as refuge for the villagers' families. Since 1999, Prejmer has been one of the seven villages in the UNESCO World Heritage site Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania.

**Hărman.** The church began as a 13th-century Romanesque basilica and was taken over around 1240 by the Cistercians of Cârța. The walls date from the 15th century: the inner wall is about 12 m high and had seven towers, and the 32 m bell tower was once the tallest in the Bârsa area. A chapel in the east tower was painted around 1460–1470, mainly with the Last Judgment; the paintings were whitewashed after the Reformation and uncovered in the 1920s ([Romanian Wikipedia, with references to the heritage literature](https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biserica_fortificat%C4%83_din_H%C4%83rman)).

Both are still Evangelical (Lutheran) parish churches, like Brașov's [Black Church](https://wowbrasov.com/en/discover-the-black-church-in-brasov), which was built by the same Saxon community in the city.

## What you'll see at Prejmer

- **The entrance passage.** You reach the courtyard through a long passage under the gate building.
- **The ring of storage rooms.** The inside of the round wall is lined with rooms on four levels, reached by wooden stairs and galleries. Village families used them to store provisions and to shelter during attacks.
- **The church.** The Gothic church stands in the middle of the courtyard.
- **The wall walk.** A defensive walkway runs along the top of the wall.

## What you'll see at Hărman

- **The walls and towers.** Hărman's inner wall with its towers is the main sight, with the remains of an outer ring around it.
- **The tower chapel.** The 15th-century paintings in the chapel of the east tower, with the Last Judgment as the main scene.
- **The church**, a three-aisled basilica, and the provision rooms built above its side aisles.

## Tickets and hours

Both churches charge an entry fee at the gate. No official source lists the 2026 prices or opening hours online, so bring some cash in case cards aren't accepted.

Two things to plan around:

- Both are working parish churches, so visits can be restricted during services and church events.
- Winter hours may be shorter, so plan a November–March visit for the middle of the day.

### By train

Hărman and Prejmer both have stations on the railway from Brașov towards Sfântu Gheorghe, but Hărman station is outside the village (bus 520 stops there on its way to Prejmer), so the bus is the simpler option.

### By car

Both villages are reached from the DN11, the road from Brașov towards Târgu Secuiesc and Bacău. Hărman is about 12 km from the centre of Brașov and Prejmer about 18 km; the two villages are about 8 km apart.

### By taxi or ride-hailing

A taxi or Bolt is the easiest way to link the two villages if you came by bus, since they are on different bus lines. Bolt's app shows the price before you book.

## Both in half a day

**By car.** Brașov → Hărman (about 20 minutes) → Prejmer (about 10–15 minutes) → Brașov (about 25 minutes). With an hour at each church, that is about four hours.

**By bus, on a weekday.** The two villages are on different lines, so go back to Terminal Gară in between:

1. 09:12 line 520 from Terminal Gară, arriving at Colegiul Țara Bârsei at 09:43.
2. About an hour in Prejmer; 10:57 back from Biserica Fortificată to Terminal Gară.
3. 11:50 line 511 to Hărman, arriving at Centru at about 12:08.
4. About an hour in Hărman; 13:01 back from Centru Hărman.

Check the RATBV timetable on the day in case the 520 runs you plan to use are school-day only.

**By bus, at a weekend.** 09:25 line 520 to Prejmer (arriving 09:56), 12:42 back to Terminal Gară, 13:25 line 511 to Hărman, 14:26 back. That gives you more time in Prejmer than you strictly need, so take it slowly or swap the second leg for a taxi.

## Tips

- **Wear shoes with grip.** At Prejmer, the rooms in the wall are reached by wooden stairs and galleries.
- **Go on a weekday if you rely on the bus.** Line 511 to Hărman has seven departures at weekends, with a gap from 07:35 to 12:00.
- **At a weekend, Prejmer is the easier one by bus.** Line 520 has eight departures each way on Saturdays and Sundays.

## Combine it with

- **Brașov's Old Town.** Both villages are back in the city by early afternoon. The [Black Church](https://wowbrasov.com/en/discover-the-black-church-in-brasov) is the Saxons' main church in Brașov and makes a good pairing.
- **Other day trips.** For castles, canyons and bears, see all our [day trips from Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/day-trips-from-brasov).

## FAQ

### Can you go inside Prejmer fortified church?

Yes. You can walk into the courtyard, see the church and climb to the storage rooms built into the wall. Which rooms and levels are open can change from day to day, so ask at the gate.

### Is Prejmer a UNESCO World Heritage site?

Yes. Since 1999 it has been one of the seven villages in the UNESCO site Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania. Hărman is not part of the listing.

### How do I get from Brașov to Prejmer by bus?

Take RATBV line 520 from Terminal Gară, next to Brașov railway station. The ride takes about 30 minutes and costs 7 lei. Get off at Colegiul Țara Bârsei.

### Prejmer or Hărman: which one should I visit?

Prejmer, if you only have time for one: it is larger, and its four levels of storage rooms are the main reason people come. Hărman is closer to Brașov, quieter and has the painted tower chapel.

### How long do you need at Prejmer and Hărman?

About an hour at each. With the buses, both take half a day from Brașov.
