Brașov has **14 free automated public toilets** in parks and squares, including two in the Old Town, at Piața Sfântul Ioan and Livada Poștei. Classic paid toilets stand in Piața Sfatului and under Tâmpa, and the train station has a paid one with coin machines.

These "smart" pods are run by City Hall under a contract signed in 2022, and there is one at the bus terminus in Poiana Brașov. If all else fails, the AFI Brașov and Coresi shopping centres are open every day from 10:00 to 22:00. The list below is based on the city's announcements and local press reports, with Diana's photos of the pods and the classic toilets.

## Quick facts (October 2026)

-
**14 smart toilets, all free**
The count reported by local press in February and March 2025; no new pods have been announced since. Local reports say they work around the clock.

-
**Paid toilets**
Classic toilets in Piața Sfatului and on Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu (under Tâmpa), and at the train station. Carry coins: the station machines don't take cards.

-
**Contract**
A four-year framework agreement signed in October 2022 for 6 to 28 pods, worth 10.1 million lei with VAT. Each pod costs 289,765 lei including four years of maintenance.

-
**Upkeep**
1,800 lei per pod per month for cleaning, consumables and repairs, included in the price. The four-year term runs out in autumn 2026.

## Smart automated toilets: locations

All the pods are free. They open with a touch-free button, clean the bowl and floor automatically after each visit, give voice instructions in several languages and are heated in winter. Inside there is a grab rail, and a sensor stops the door closing on a wheelchair. An SOS button opens the door even during a power cut, and a light and sound warn you in the last minutes of your time.

## Classic paid toilets in the Old Town

City Hall still runs two classic toilet blocks for tourists: one in **Piața Sfatului** and one on **Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu**, the promenade under Tâmpa near the cable car. Both charge a small fee, so keep a few lei in coins. The renovated block in the **Centrul Civic** was reported in 2023 as finished but not yet connected to electricity, and there's no confirmation that it has opened since.

The toilets in the Astra, Dacia, Star and Tractorul food markets are meant for stallholders, but shoppers can use them if they need to. For market addresses and hours, see our guide to the [food markets of Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/farmers-markets-of-brasov).

## The train station and the bus terminal

The toilet at **Gara Brașov**, the train station, is paid, with payment machines and turnstiles instead of an attendant. A local news report in January 2024 said the machines didn't take cards and often rejected banknotes, so bring coins, and follow the WC signs. The new RATBV city bus terminal next to the station also has toilets for passengers.

## Poiana Brașov

The free smart toilet in Poiana Brașov is at the **RATBV bus terminus**, where bus 20 from Livada Poștei ends. There is no train station in Poiana Brașov: you get there by road, on bus 20, by taxi or by car. Cafés and restaurants around the cable car stations are the other option.

## Shopping centres and supermarkets

When you need more space, for example with small children, the shopping centres are the easiest choice:

- **AFI Brașov**, Bd. 15 Noiembrie 78, about 10 minutes from the Old Town, open every day 10:00–22:00.
- **Coresi Shopping Resort**, Str. Zaharia Stancu 1, in the north of the city, open every day 10:00–22:00 (the Auchan hypermarket from 07:00).

Large hypermarkets such as Carrefour usually have customer toilets too. For more on the malls, including how to get there, see our [rainy day guide](https://wowbrasov.com/en/what-to-do-in-brasov-on-a-rainy-day).

## Portable toilets at events

For festivals, markets and places without a sewer connection, the city rents portable cabins. The contract signed in May 2024 covered 20 cabins for eight months, for 73,601.5 lei with VAT. During big events in Piața Sfatului, such as the [Christmas market](https://wowbrasov.com/en/brasov-christmas-market), expect extra cabins around the square.

## Tips

- **Carry coins.** The smart pods are free, but the classic and station toilets are paid and the station machines don't take cards.
- **In the Old Town**, the nearest options from Piața Sfatului are the classic toilet in the square itself and the smart pods at Piața Sfântul Ioan and Livada Poștei.
- **Cafés** are the fallback: order something and ask for *toaleta*.
- **Before a hike** on Tâmpa, use the classic toilet on Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu, at the bottom of the trails. For routes, see our guide to [walks in Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/6-ideal-places-for-taking-a-walk-in-brasov).
