Seven Ladders Canyon (Canionul 7 Scări) is a short limestone gorge just south-east of Brașov, climbed on nine metal ladders beside small waterfalls. Entry costs 25 lei for adults, and it is open daily 10:00–16:00 outside the winter closure. Take bus 17B to Dâmbul Morii in about 30 minutes, then walk an hour through the forest.

All prices, hours and rules below come from the administrator, the Săcele local forestry authority (Regia Publică Locală a Pădurilor Săcele), on [canionul7scari.ro](https://canionul7scari.ro/tarife/). We checked them on 10 October 2026.

## Is Seven Ladders Canyon worth it?

Yes, as a half-day outing. The canyon itself is small: 160 m long with a height difference of 58 m. You'll be through it in under an hour. What makes the trip is the combination: an easy forest walk, a cool and noisy gorge climbed on ladders, and the option of the zip line or a longer hike on Piatra Mare afterwards. Children can do it too, with a harness and helmet.

It is a good fit if you want a change from museums, have a free morning, and are comfortable on steep metal ladders.

Skip it if you are afraid of heights or feel claustrophobic in narrow spaces, which the administrator warns about, if it is raining hard, or between December and February, when the canyon is closed.

## Where it is (and where it isn't)

The canyon is at Dâmbul Morii, part of Săcele, in the Piatra Mare mountains, off DN1 between Brașov and Predeal near Timișu de Jos. That is **south-east of Brașov**, on the road towards Predeal and Bucharest.

Some older guides, including an earlier version of this page, said Seven Ladders sits "just across the valley" from the [Libearty Bear Sanctuary](https://wowbrasov.com/en/libearty-bear-sanctuary-zarnesti-guide). That's wrong. Libearty is in Zărnești, about 27 km **south-west** of Brașov, on the opposite side of the city. To do both in one day you have to go back through Brașov, so realistically that only works with a car.

## Getting there from Brașov

### Bus 17B (cheapest)

RATBV bus 17B runs from Terminal Gară, outside Brașov railway station, to Dâmbul Morii in about 30 minutes. A single trip costs 5 lei, valid for 90 minutes under the fares from 1 June 2026. Weekdays have a bus roughly every 40 to 50 minutes. On weekends there are far fewer:

| Saturday and Sunday | Times |
|---|---|
| Terminal Gară → Dâmbul Morii | 06:17, 07:47, 09:12, 12:12, 13:37, 15:02, 16:37, 18:17, 19:47 |
| Dâmbul Morii → Terminal Gară | 07:12, 08:37, 10:02, 13:02, 14:27, 15:52, 17:27, 19:12, 20:37 |

Timetable valid from 1 March 2025, checked on [ratbv.ro](https://www.ratbv.ro/afisaje/17b-dus.html) on 10 October 2026. On a weekend, the 09:12 gets you to the canyon soon after it opens at 10:00; the 07:47 leaves time for a slow walk up. Coming back, the last weekend buses leave Dâmbul Morii at 17:27, 19:12 and 20:37.

### By car

Take DN1 from Brașov towards Predeal as far as Timișu de Jos. The turn-off to Domeniul Dâmbu Morii is on your left coming from Brașov; the administrator's directions, written for drivers from Bucharest, say turn right. Cross the bridge over the Timiș river and park at the barrier. From there to the canyon is at most an hour on foot.

### By train

Only a handful of Regio trains stop at the Timișu de Jos halt (16–17 minutes from Brașov). On 10 October 2026 there was one in the morning (06:20) and the next was not until 14:15, according to the [Infofer timetable](https://mersultrenurilor.infofer.ro/ro-RO/Rute-trenuri/Brasov/Timisu-de-Jos-hc). For most visitors, the bus is more practical.

### Taxi or ride-hailing

A taxi or Bolt can drop you at Dâmbul Morii. Arrange your ride back before you set off: there is no mobile signal inside the canyon, and don't count on one at the barrier either. See [getting around Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/transportation-in-brasov-how-to-get-around-the-city-and-its-surroundings) for local taxi firms.

## Tickets and opening hours

| | Price |
|---|---|
| Canyon, adults | 25 lei |
| Canyon, children and students | 15 lei |
| Canyon, organised school groups (with a teacher and a group list) | 10 lei per child |
| Zip line, full route | 125 lei |
| Zip line, half route | 75 lei |
| Children's zip line | 35 lei for 30 minutes |

- **Hours:** the canyon is open daily 10:00–16:00 (16:00 is the last entry). Since 28 September the zip line runs only on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting, with the last descent at 16:00 ([administrator's notice](https://canionul7scari.ro/)).
- **Season:** the canyon is closed in winter. Its rules name December to February, and the site's FAQ says the canyon opens from April to October. Ice is the reason for the closure. The administrator can also close it at short notice for storms, heavy rain or other risks. In March, November and on doubtful days, ring the hut on 0746 772 274 before you go.
- **Where to pay:** at Cabana Șapte Scări, the hut at the canyon entrance, which also rents out harnesses and helmets. You need an ID document to rent gear.

## The route: trailhead, canyon and back

**Approach: about 1 hour, easy.** From the Dâmbul Morii barrier, a forest trail follows the Șipoaia stream up to the canyon hut. The administrator rates it easy and puts it at about an hour.

*Most of the walk to the canyon is through forest like this, on an easy, gradual path.*

**The canyon: 15 to 45 minutes, moderate.** Inside, the stream drops over seven rock steps between 2.5 m and 15 m high. These give the canyon its name and become waterfalls when the water is high. You climb beside them on nine metal ladders and connecting walkways, first installed in 2013 and since renovated.

You need no technical gear, but some ladders are close to vertical. The administrator's own estimates range from 15–30 minutes to 30–45 minutes, depending on how busy it is.

*The walkways and ladders keep you just above the stream as it drops through the gorge.*

**Back down.** You can't go back down through the canyon, because traffic is one way, bottom to top. From the top you have three ways back:

- the **red-dot bypass trail**, 10–15 minutes down to the entrance
- a **longer forest loop** back to the base, about 2 hours
- the **zip line**, if you've paid for it

**Piatra Mare peak.** If you have energy left, a trail continues from the top of the canyon to the summit of Piatra Mare, at 1,843 m, about 3 hours of moderate hiking up from the canyon. Check the weather and the time before you commit.

In total, allow 3 to 4 hours from Dâmbul Morii and back for the canyon alone, and most of a day if you add the peak.

## The zip line

The Seven Ladders zip line (Tiroliana 7 Scări) is the longest in Romania, according to the administrator: about 4 km of cable in 37 sections. The shortest section is 47 m and the longest 273 m. The adult zip line has strict limits:

- over 18 only
- weight 50–95 kg
- height 1.50–1.95 m
- a safety briefing is compulsory, and you sign a form before you start
- one person per cable at a time, and no more than 3 people on a platform

There is a separate children's zip line, 35 lei for 30 minutes. The zip line stops in bad weather. In that case the fee isn't refunded, but the validity of your access bracelet can be extended. Full rules: [zip line regulations](https://canionul7scari.ro/regulament-de-utilizare-a-tirolianei-7-scari/).

## Safety and what to wear

The administrator's [canyon rules](https://canionul7scari.ro/regulament-de-tranzitare-a-canionului-sapte-scari/) are short and worth reading. The main points:

- **Footwear and clothing:** hiking boots or approach shoes and a waterproof jacket are required. In summer the canyon is about 10–15 °C cooler than outside, so bring a warm layer.
- **Hands free:** you may not carry bags or objects that keep your hands busy on the ladders. Use a small backpack.
- **One at a time:** only one person on a ladder at a time. The exception is an adult climbing directly behind a child. No more than 10 people may stand on a connecting bridge.
- **Children:** minors must be with an adult. Children under 7 must wear a harness and helmet, rented at the hut. Harnesses and helmets are also recommended for children under 14, people who are overweight or not very fit, and anyone afraid of heights. The administrator recommends a helmet for adults too.
- **Wet or icy ladders:** don't go in during heavy rain or storms. The ladders and rock are slippery, and stones and branches can fall. Entry is banned in winter because of ice.
- **No signal:** there is no mobile signal in the canyon. In an emergency call 112, Salvamont on 0728 266 668, or the hut on 0746 772 274.
- **Photos:** don't block the ladders or bridges to take pictures.
- **Alcohol:** anyone who has been drinking is not allowed in.

## Tips

- **Go early on a weekday.** The canyon opens at 10:00, and on weekends queues may form at the ladders, because only one person climbs at a time.
- **Gloves help.** The metal is cold and wet even in summer. This is our suggestion, not a rule.
- **Protect your phone.** The administrator warns that the high humidity can affect electronic devices.
- **Check the weather on Piatra Mare.** Summer thunderstorms are common in the Carpathians in the afternoon, so finishing by early afternoon is safer. Our [Brașov weather guide](https://wowbrasov.com/en/the-weather-and-seasons-in-brasov) covers the seasons.

## Combine it with

- **Brașov's Old Town:** you're back at the railway station by bus in about 30 minutes, in time for an afternoon in the centre. See [things to do in Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/the-city-of-brasov).
- **More walks around Brașov:** if you liked the forest part, our [walks in and around Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/6-ideal-places-for-taking-a-walk-in-brasov) guide has easier options closer to town.
- **Peleș Castle:** Sinaia is further along DN1 past Predeal, so with a car you could pair the canyon with [Peleș Castle](https://wowbrasov.com/en/discovering-peles-castle-a-magnificent-romanian-landmark). Remember Peleș is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
- **Libearty Bear Sanctuary:** on the other side of Brașov. Its tours run only in the morning (09:45 and 11:00), so you would need to do the sanctuary first and the canyon in the afternoon, by car.
