Sighișoara and Viscri make a long but straightforward day trip from Brașov **by car**: about 80 km (1 h 20) to Viscri, 45 km (50 min) on to Sighișoara and 120 km (about 2 h) back. Without a car, use the **buses** to Bunești and Sighișoara or the **UNESCO-Bus** tourist minibus, which links Brașov, Viscri and Sighișoara three days a week. Skip the train for now: in October 2026 direct trains took 3 h 28 min to 4 h 27 min each way while the line is being rebuilt. One more thing to know before you go: the inside of Viscri's church has been closed for restoration since 14 September 2026, probably until 2027, but the walls, museum and two towers are open, for 10 lei.

## Is it worth it?

Yes, if you want to see Saxon Transylvania beyond Brașov. The two places show its two sides. **Sighișoara** is a walled hilltop town that people still live in, with a 64 m clock tower over the gate; its historic centre has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999. **Viscri** is a single long village street of farmhouses that leads up to a whitewashed fortified church, one of the [Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania](https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/596) on the same list.

It suits you if:

- you have a car, or can book the UNESCO-Bus on one of its days
- you like old towns and village life more than castles
- you are happy with about four hours on the road in one day

Think again if:

- **the church interior at Viscri is the main reason.** It is closed for restoration until the work is finished, currently expected in 2027. You can still walk the walls and see the museum.
- **you can only go on a Monday.** The Clock Tower museum in Sighișoara is closed on Mondays.
- **you have no car and the UNESCO-Bus is full.** The Viscri leg then depends on a taxi from Bunești, or a 7.5 km walk each way.

If you'd rather see one Saxon town properly, [Sibiu](https://wowbrasov.com/en/how-to-travel-from-brasov-to-sibiu) is the alternative: more to see, and direct InterRegio trains from Brașov in under three hours. You can also stay a night in Sighișoara and see Viscri on the way back.

Driving times are from an OpenStreetMap route planner, without stops. Bus times and fares are from [Autogari.ro](https://www.autogari.ro/Transport/Brasov-Sighisoara), the UNESCO-Bus timetable from [its website](https://www.unesco-bus.ro/red-line/) and trains from [CFR Călători](https://bilete.cfrcalatori.ro/ro-RO/Rute-trenuri/Brasov/Sighisoara), all checked for Saturday 10 October 2026.

### By car

Take the DN13 (E60) north out of Brașov through Feldioara, Hoghiz and Rupea. At **Bunești**, turn off onto county road DJ104L for Viscri, 7.5 km away. The county road between Bunești, Viscri and Dacia was rebuilt with EU funds under a project scheduled to end in 2022 ([Kohesio](https://kohesio.ec.europa.eu/en/projects/Q2746715)).

**Parking in Viscri:** the church asks visitors to leave their car in the free public car park at the edge of the village, because most of the village is residents' parking only ([Viscri fortified church](https://www.biserica-fortificata-viscri.ro/en/)). From there you walk up the main street to the church.

From Viscri, go back to Bunești and carry on along the DN13 through Saschiz to Sighișoara. The way home is the same DN13, about 120 km.

### By UNESCO-Bus

The UNESCO-Bus is a hop-on, hop-off tourist minibus run by Carpathian Travel Center. Its **Red Line** runs Brașov – Feldioara – Rupea – Viscri – Criț – Cloașterf – Saschiz – Sighișoara and back. From May to October it runs on **Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday**; from November to April on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a single loop.

**Prices:** €65 for an adult day pass, €30 for a child under 12, €35 for a one-way ticket between two stops. You book online at least 10 hours before departure, and the meeting point in Brașov is Bulevardul Eroilor 27 ([booking page](https://marketplace.trekksoft.com/en/activity/335777/unesco-bus-red-line)). On 10 October 2026 the operator's site said the Red Line was **fully booked until 31 October**.

**Summer 2026 timetable** (May–October):

| Leaves Brașov | Viscri | Sighișoara |
|---|---|---|
| 08:30 | 10:05 | 11:00 |
| 13:30 | 15:05 | 16:00 |
| 15:30 | 17:05 | 18:00 |

| Leaves Sighișoara | Viscri | Back in Brașov |
|---|---|---|
| 11:00 | 11:55 | 13:30 |
| 13:00 | 13:55 | 15:30 |
| 18:00 | 18:55 | 20:30 |

The 13:30 run from Brașov and the 11:00 run from Sighișoara skip Feldioara and Rupea. The winter timetable on the site has one run each way: Brașov 08:30 → Viscri 10:05 → Sighișoara 11:00, and back from Sighișoara at 13:00 (Viscri 13:55, Brașov 15:30). That is not enough time to see both places properly.

### By bus and taxi

Some of the minibuses heading for Sighișoara stop at Bunești on the DN13. They leave from the **Sala Sporturilor** stop on Bulevardul Gării or the **OMV petrol station** by the train station ([Autogari.ro](https://www.autogari.ro/Transport/Brasov-BunestiBV)).

- **Brașov → Bunești:** six a day, at 06:00, 07:00, 08:40, 12:00, 14:00 and 19:30; 1 h 05 – 1 h 19; 60–85 lei.
- **Bunești → Sighișoara:** six a day, at 07:10, 08:15, 09:45, 13:10, 15:20 and 20:40; 29–43 min; 50–75 lei ([Autogari.ro](https://www.autogari.ro/Transport/BunestiBV-Sighisoara)).
- **Sighișoara → Brașov:** 27 a day, the last ones at 19:30, 19:35, 20:00 and 22:00; most take 1 h 30 – 2 h 30; 43–100 lei ([Autogari.ro](https://www.autogari.ro/Transport/Sighisoara-Brasov)).

**Bunești to Viscri is the weak link.** No scheduled bus covers the 7.5 km, so you need a taxi or transfer arranged in advance, or a walk of roughly 1 h 30 – 2 h each way along the county road. If you can't arrange a lift, do Sighișoara alone by bus (direct, about 31 a day) and see Viscri another time.

### By train

CFR Călători runs seven direct trains a day from Brașov to Sighișoara (128 km), but in October 2026 they took **3 h 28 min to 4 h 27 min**. The line is being rebuilt for 160 km/h under the Brașov–Simeria rail project ([CFR SA, May 2026](https://cfr.ro/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/CFR-SA-comunicat-de-presa-finantare-Bv-Sighisoara.pdf)), and until then the train is slower than the bus.

- **Fares:** 61.50 lei in second class on an InterRegio, seat reservation included; 28 lei on a Regio ([CFR tariff tables](https://www.cfrcalatori.ro/pretul-integral-al-legitimatiilor-de-calatorie/)).
- **The only workable day trip:** R 3501 at 06:07 (in Sighișoara at 10:34) and R 3536 back at 15:37 (in Brașov at 19:59). That is five hours in Sighișoara and more than eight on trains, with no time for Viscri.

### Organised tours

Several Brașov agencies sell day tours that combine Sighișoara and Viscri, often with Rupea or Saschiz. They solve the Viscri problem if you don't drive.

**Viscri during the restoration.** As of mid-September 2026, the church and the main tower are closed while the roof, frescoes, floor, galleries and pews are restored, with completion expected in 2027. The heritage museum, the terracotta exhibition, the top floor of the South Bastion and the Bacon Tower stay open, and the fee is reduced to 10 lei. The complex also closes during the monthly church service, usually on the second or third Sunday of the month between 11:00 and 12:00, and for special events. Drones are not allowed.

## What you'll see

### Viscri

The church began around 1100 as a small single-hall chapel, built by Székely border guards and taken over by the Saxon settlers who arrived later in the 12th century. The village fortified it around 1500, added towers in the 17th century and a second ring of walls in the 18th ([Romanian Wikipedia](https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biserica_fortificat%C4%83_din_Viscri)).

While the church is closed, a visit means:

- **The walls and the inner courtyard**, with the church's white bulk in the middle.
- **The museum**, set up inside the walls, with Saxon costumes, furniture and household textiles and pottery.
- **The Bacon Tower**, where village families kept their smoked bacon, a use that lasted into the 1960s.
- **The South Bastion**, whose top floor is open for the view over the village and the hills.

The village is worth the walk on its own: one long main street of Saxon farmhouses leading up to the church. King Charles III bought and restored an 18th-century house here in 2006, which now takes guests ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscri)).

### Sighișoara

A loop of the upper town takes two to three hours at an easy pace:

1. **The Clock Tower** (Turnul cu Ceas), the 64 m gate tower that has housed the History Museum since 1899. Its rooms cover archaeology, ethnography, ceramics, furniture, clocks and an old pharmacy, and the top gallery looks out over the roofs.
2. **Casa Vlad Dracul**, next to the tower, now a restaurant. Vlad Dracul lived in Sighișoara from 1431 to 1435, and his son Vlad III, the later "Țepeș", was probably born in the town between 1428 and 1431, although historians aren't certain where ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlad_the_Impaler)). For the real story, read our guide to [Vlad Țepeș and the Dracula legend](https://wowbrasov.com/en/vlad-tepes-and-his-connection-with-the-legendary-story-of-dracula).
3. **Piața Cetății**, the citadel square, and the **Monastery Church**, the former Dominican church first mentioned in 1298, with a baroque altar of 1680 and a collection of 17th- and 18th-century Anatolian carpets ([Kirchenburgen Foundation](https://kirchenburgen.org/en/location/schaessburg-sighisoara/)).
4. **The covered stairs** (Scara Școlarilor), a 17th-century wooden staircase that climbs the hill under its own roof to the school and the church.
5. **The Church on the Hill** (Biserica din Deal), built between 1429 and 1488. Its medieval wall paintings were uncovered during restoration in the 1990s, and it now works as a museum of altars brought from abandoned or endangered village churches.
6. **The walls and towers.** Nine of the original 14 towers survive, each named after the guild that built it ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_Centre_of_Sighi%C8%99oara)).

## Two one-day plans

### Plan 1: by car

**Mid-May to mid-September**, when the Clock Tower is open until 17:30 or 18:30:

| Time | |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | Leave Brașov on the DN13 |
| 09:30 | Viscri: park at the edge of the village and walk up the street |
| 10:00–12:00 | The fortified church and the village |
| 12:00–13:00 | Drive to Sighișoara via Bunești and Saschiz |
| 13:00–18:00 | Lunch, the Clock Tower, the covered stairs, the Church on the Hill |
| 18:00–20:00 | Drive back to Brașov |

**From mid-September to mid-May**, swap the order: the Clock Tower closes at 15:30 and, from 26 October, Viscri at 16:00. Leave Brașov at 08:00, spend 10:00–13:30 in Sighișoara, drive to Viscri for 14:30–16:00 and be back in Brașov by about 17:30.

### Plan 2: by bus and taxi

| Time | |
|---|---|
| 08:40 | Minibus from Brașov (Sala Sporturilor or the OMV by the station) to Bunești, arriving 09:45 |
| 09:45 | Pre-booked taxi to Viscri, 7.5 km |
| 10:00–12:30 | Viscri |
| 12:45 | Taxi back to Bunești |
| 13:10 | Minibus to Sighișoara, arriving 13:39 |
| 13:40–19:15 | Sighișoara |
| 19:30–20:00 | Last minibuses back to Brașov, arriving 21:15–21:45 |

This plan works every day of the week, since all three bus routes run daily, but only if the taxi is sorted. Book the bus seats on Autogari.ro and check the pick-up point in Sighișoara when you book. On a UNESCO-Bus day, the bus does the Viscri leg for you: 08:30 from Brașov, 15:05 from Viscri to Sighișoara and 18:00 back to Brașov. That gives you five hours in Viscri, more than most people need, and two in Sighișoara.

## Tips

- **Go between Tuesday and Saturday.** The Clock Tower is closed on Mondays, and Viscri closes for an hour during the monthly Sunday service.
- **Check the season before you plan the order.** Winter hours start on 16 September in Sighișoara and on 26 October in Viscri.
- **Wear shoes for cobbles and steps.** Sighișoara's upper town is steep, and the covered stairs are long.
- **Leave the drone at home.** Flying drones over Viscri is forbidden.
- **Consider staying a night in Sighișoara.** The drive back after a full day is long, and you can see Viscri on the way home the next morning.

## Combine it with

- **Rupea Citadel**, on a hill above the DN13 on the way. A short stop if you're driving; the UNESCO-Bus stops in Rupea on its 08:30 and 15:30 runs from Brașov.
- **Saschiz**, on the DN13 between Bunești and Sighișoara, has another UNESCO-listed fortified church, and the UNESCO-Bus stops there.
- **Sibiu**, if you're touring Transylvania rather than going back to Brașov: our [Brașov to Sibiu guide](https://wowbrasov.com/en/how-to-travel-from-brasov-to-sibiu) covers the trains and buses.

## FAQ

### Can you visit Sighișoara and Viscri in one day from Brașov?

Yes. By car it's about 4 hours of driving for roughly 245 km in total, which leaves 2 hours in Viscri and 4–5 in Sighișoara. Without a car it works on UNESCO-Bus days, or with buses to Bunești and Sighișoara plus a pre-booked taxi for the last 7.5 km to Viscri.

### How do you get from Brașov to Viscri without a car?

Take a minibus to Bunești on the DN13 (six a day, 1 h 05 – 1 h 19, 60–85 lei), then a taxi or a 7.5 km walk. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from May to October, the UNESCO-Bus leaves Brașov at 08:30 and reaches Viscri at 10:05 (€65 day pass, €35 one way).

### Is there a train from Brașov to Sighișoara?

Yes, seven direct trains a day, but in October 2026 they took 3 h 28 min to 4 h 27 min because the line is being rebuilt. Most buses are faster, at 1 h 20 min to 2 h 30 min.

### How much is the bus from Brașov to Sighișoara?

43–100 lei one way, depending on the operator, with about 31 departures a day between 06:00 and 20:56 (Autogari.ro, checked 10 October 2026).

### Is Viscri church open?

The inside of the church and its main tower have been closed for restoration since 14 September 2026, with reopening expected in 2027. The walls, the museum, the Bacon Tower and the top of the South Bastion are open daily, and the fee is reduced to 10 lei.

### Is the Sighișoara Clock Tower open on Mondays?

No. The History Museum in the Clock Tower is open Tuesday to Sunday. From 16 September to 14 May it closes at 15:30.

### How long do you need in Sighișoara?

Two to three hours for the Clock Tower, the covered stairs, the Church on the Hill and a walk along the walls. Add lunch and you'll fill an afternoon.
