## On foot

The Old Town is compact: Piața Sfatului, the Black Church, the Council House and the city walls are all within a 10–15 minute walk of each other, and much of the centre around Strada Republicii and Piața Sfatului is pedestrianised.

It is not flat, though. The Old Town sits in a narrow valley between Tâmpa and the Warthe hill, and the streets climb as soon as you head for the walls, the Black and White Towers or the Șchei district around St Nicholas Church. Many streets are cobbled, so comfortable shoes matter more than you might expect, and pushchairs and wheelchairs will find some lanes hard going.

Our pillar guide, [things to do in Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/the-city-of-brasov), has the main sights on one route.

## Buses and trolleybuses (RATBV)

RATBV runs the city's buses and trolleybuses, many of them electric, and the suburban lines to towns such as Râșnov and Predeal.

*Many RATBV city buses are now fully electric.*

### Fares

| Ticket | Price | Valid |
|---|---|---|
| Urban trip | 5 lei | 90 minutes on all city lines, including Poiana Brașov |
| 2-trip pack | 10 lei | 90 minutes per trip |
| Urban Pass 1 day | 20 lei | The day it is issued |
| Urban Pass 3 days | 50 lei | 3 days |
| Urban Pass 7 days | 90 lei | 7 days |
| Metropolitan trip | 12 lei | 90 minutes on any RATBV line, city or suburban |
| Brașov–Râșnov | 7 lei | Single trip on the suburban line |
| Brașov–Zărnești or Brașov–Predeal | 8 lei | Single trip on the suburban line |

Fares from the [RATBV tariff page](https://ratbv.ro/tarife-trasee-urbane-si-metropolitane/), which cites tariff decision no. 26 of 13 May 2026. A 1-day pass costs the same as four single trips.

### Free on Fridays

Since 3 April 2026, every RATBV bus and trolleybus has been **free all day on Fridays**, from 00:00 to 24:00, under the city's *Vinerea Verde* ("Green Friday") scheme. You don't need a ticket, and don't tap your card on the validator: RATBV says money paid by validating on a Friday isn't refunded.

It covers the whole city, including bus 20 to Poiana Brașov, and the RATBV lines in Râșnov, Predeal, Prejmer, Hărman, Codlea, Cristian, Bod, Feldioara, Sânpetru, Tărlungeni, Teliu and Vama Buzăului. If your trip goes beyond those places, you pay the normal fare.

The buses to Bran are not run by RATBV, so they aren't free. RATBV doesn't say whether the A1 airport bus is included: the airport is in Ghimbav, which isn't on the list, so ask the driver. Passes you have already bought aren't extended for the free days, according to [RATBV](https://ratbv.ro/vinerea-verde/).

### How to pay

- **Contactless bank card:** tap it on the orange validator inside the vehicle. You do not need a receipt; if an inspector checks, you show the last four digits of the card.
- **24Pay app:** buy and activate tickets on your phone.
- **Kiosks and machines:** the blue RATBV kiosks at the main stops, the ticket machines at stops, the sales points in the transport terminals, and post offices.
- **From the driver:** only on the suburban lines and on nine city lines: 17B, 20, 25, 28, 34B, 41, 60, 100 and A1.

RATBV does not list an SMS ticket option. These payment options are from the [RATBV website](https://www.ratbv.ro/).

*The validator says “Apropiați cardul!” (hold your card close): tap your bank card against it.*

*Blue kiosks at the main stops sell tickets and passes.*

**Bus 20 to Poiana Brașov.** It leaves Livada Poștei every 20 minutes from 07:00 to 18:40 on weekdays, with departures every 30 minutes early in the morning, at 06:00 and 06:30, and in the evening, from 19:00 to 23:30. At weekends the first bus is at 06:30.

**Bran.** Buses to Bran leave from Autogara 2, not from a RATBV stop. Our guide to [getting to Bran Castle from Brașov](https://wowbrasov.com/en/how-to-reach-bran-castle-from-brasov) has the timetable and the last bus back.

## Tâmpa cable car

The cable car climbs from the foot of Tâmpa, behind the Old Town's eastern walls, to the Panoramic restaurant and the viewpoint near the Brașov letters. The lower station is on Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu, a short walk from Piața Sfatului. The ride takes about two minutes in a cabin for 25 people, and the cabin takes pushchairs and wheelchairs.

- **Prices:** 45 lei return for adults, 30 lei for children aged 6–12; one way 30 lei for adults and 20 lei for children.
- **Hours:** Monday 12:30–22:00, Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 10:30–22:00, Friday and Saturday 10:30–22:30.
- **Waiting:** the operator warns that at busy times the average wait is about 30 minutes.

Prices and hours from the [operator's page](https://www.panoramicbrasov.ro/telecabina-tampa), checked on 10 October 2026. The cable car can stop in strong wind and for maintenance. If you would rather walk, the marked serpentine path from the Old Town takes about 1 h 15 min to 1 h 30 min to the top.

## Taxis and Bolt

Bolt operates in Brașov, and its app gives a price before you book. Its estimates on [bolt.eu](https://bolt.eu/en/cities/brasov/) when we checked:

- From the Bran bus stop, called "Bus to Bran" in the app, to the Aro Palace hotel in the centre: **14.80 lei**, 3.4 km.
- Aro Palace to Brașov airport: **39.80 lei**, 10.6 km.

Prices go up at busy times. Licensed taxis use a meter and wait at ranks around the centre and at the train station. If you take one, check that the meter is running.

*Licensed taxis waiting in central Brașov.*

## Driving and parking

You do not need a car in the city: the Old Town is largely pedestrianised and parking in the centre is limited and paid. A car is useful for day trips to places with infrequent buses, such as the fortified churches or the [Seven Ladders Canyon](https://wowbrasov.com/en/seven-ladders-canyon-brasov-guide). If you drive in, leave the car at your accommodation and walk or take the bus into the centre.

## Leaving Brașov
