Walk round the Old Town and take the bus for everything else. A single RATBV ticket costs 5 lei and lasts 90 minutes on every city line, including bus 20 to Poiana Brașov and the A1 to the airport. To pay, just tap a contactless bank card on the validator. On Fridays RATBV buses are free all day in Brașov and the nearby towns in the scheme, though the A1 airport bus may not be.

On foot

The Old Town is small. Piața Sfatului, the Black Church, the Council House and the city walls are all within a 10–15 minute walk of each other, and much of the centre around Strada Republicii and Piața Sfatului is pedestrianised.

It isn’t flat, though. The Old Town sits in a narrow valley between Tâmpa and the Warthe hill, so the streets start to climb as soon as you head for the walls, the Black and White Towers or the Șchei district around St Nicholas Church. Many streets are cobbled, which makes comfortable shoes more important than you might think. With a pushchair or a wheelchair, you’ll find some lanes hard going.

Buses and trolleybuses (RATBV)

RATBV runs the city’s buses and trolleybuses, and many of them are electric. It also runs the suburban lines to towns such as Râșnov and Predeal.

Fares are from the RATBV tariff page, which cites tariff decision no. 26 of 13 May 2026. A 1-day pass costs the same as four single trips, so it only saves you money if you make more than four trips that day.

Free on Fridays

Since 3 April 2026, every RATBV bus and trolleybus has been free all day on Fridays, from 00:00 to 24:00. The city calls it Vinerea Verde (“Green Friday”). You don’t need a ticket, and you shouldn’t tap your card on the validator either: if you do, RATBV won’t refund the money.

It covers the whole city, including bus 20 to Poiana Brașov, plus the RATBV lines in Râșnov, Predeal, Prejmer, Hărman, Codlea, Cristian, Bod, Feldioara, Sânpetru, Tărlungeni, Teliu and Vama Buzăului. If your trip goes further than those places, you pay the normal fare.

The buses to Bran aren’t run by RATBV, so they aren’t free. The A1 airport bus is less clear. RATBV doesn’t say whether it’s included, and the airport is in Ghimbav, which isn’t on the list, so ask the driver. If you’ve already bought a pass, it isn’t extended for the free days.

How to pay

  • Contactless bank card: tap it on the orange validator inside the bus or trolleybus. You don’t need a receipt. If an inspector checks, you just show them the last four digits of your card.
  • 24Pay app: buy and activate tickets on your phone.
  • Kiosks and machines: the blue RATBV kiosks at the main stops, the ticket machines at stops, the sales points in the transport terminals, and post offices.
  • From the driver: only on the suburban lines and on nine city lines: 17B, 20, 25, 28, 34B, 41, 60, 100 and A1.

All of these come from the RATBV website, which doesn’t list a ticket by SMS.

Long-distance buses and minibuses to Sibiu and Bucharest leave from several points near the train station, including Autogara 1 and the Sala Sporturilor stop on Bulevardul Gării. The termini and stops above come from the RATBV timetables. For live times, RATBV itself sends you to Google Maps.

Bus 20 to Poiana Brașov. On weekdays it leaves Livada Poștei every 20 minutes from 07:00 to 18:40. Early in the morning (06:00 and 06:30) and in the evening (19:00 to 23:30) it runs every 30 minutes. At weekends the first bus is at 06:30.

The ride takes about 25 minutes, and the last bus back from Poiana leaves at 23:59, so you don’t have to rush down after dinner. RATBV adds extra buses when there are more passengers. The RATBV timetable applies from 5 June 2026. Heading for the slopes? See skiing near Brașov.

A1 to the airport. Buses leave Terminal Gara every hour from 06:00 to 18:00, then at 20:00, 21:00 and 22:00, and pass Livada Poștei 12 minutes later. Coming back, they leave the airport every hour from 07:00 to 19:00, then at 21:00, 22:00 and 23:00. You pay the normal 5-lei ticket. Our Brașov airport guide has more.

Bran. Buses to Bran leave from Autogara 2, not from a RATBV stop. For the timetable and the last bus back, see our guide to getting to Bran Castle from Brașov.

Tâmpa cable car

The cable car runs from the foot of Tâmpa, just behind the Old Town’s eastern walls, up to the Panoramic restaurant and the viewpoint near the Brașov letters. The lower station is on Aleea Tiberiu Brediceanu, a short walk from Piața Sfatului. The ride takes about two minutes, in a cabin that holds 25 people and has room for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

  • Prices: 45 lei return for adults and 30 lei for children aged 6–12. One way costs 30 lei for adults and 20 lei for children.
  • Hours: Monday 12:30–22:00, Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 10:30–22:00, Friday and Saturday 10:30–22:30.
  • Waiting: at busy times you’ll wait about 30 minutes on average.

Prices and hours are from the operator’s page, checked on 10 October 2026. The cable car can stop in strong wind and for maintenance. If you’d rather walk, the marked serpentine path from the Old Town takes about 1 h 15 min to 1 h 30 min to the top.

Taxis and Bolt

Bolt works in Brașov, and the app shows you the price before you book. These were its estimates on bolt.eu when we checked:

  • From the Bran bus stop (called “Bus to Bran” in the app) to the Aro Palace hotel in the centre: 14.80 lei for 3.4 km.
  • From the Aro Palace to Brașov airport: 39.80 lei for 10.6 km.

Prices go up at busy times. Licensed taxis run on a meter and wait at ranks around the centre and at the train station. If you take one, check that the meter is running.

Driving and parking

You don’t need a car in the city. The Old Town is mostly pedestrianised, and parking in the centre is limited and paid. Where a car does help is on day trips to places with few buses, such as the fortified churches or the Seven Ladders Canyon. If you’re driving, leave the car at your accommodation and walk or take the bus into the centre.
