Brașov Public Restrooms Guide: Smart & Classic Stops
Brașov’s restroom network now mixes free smart pods, classic staffed facilities, seasonal portable units, and mall amenities so you are rarely more than a few blocks from clean, accessible facilities.
Why reliable restrooms matter in Brașov
Brașov treats public restrooms as core infrastructure: after the Livada Poștei pilot, City Hall signed a four-year, 10.1 million lei contract for up to 28 smart pods and, as of 17 May 2024, already has 14 free-to-use units across the city with another 14 scheduled through 2025. The network complements classic staffed facilities and temporary units so residents and visitors can find a clean restroom near every major square, park, or trailhead.
Use this guide to understand which option fits your route—smart pods for hands-free access, 2-lei classic blocks for staffed supervision, portable cabins at events, or mall and station amenities when you need extended hours and baby-care rooms.
Quick facts for 2025
Keep these citywide benchmarks in mind while planning pit stops.
- Smart pods live
14 smart toilets are already open (Tractorul, Livada Poștei, Piața Sf. Ioan, Uranus promenade, Poiana Brașov, etc.) with 14 more due by year-end; all are free to use.
- Per-unit capex
Each smart pod costs about 289,765 lei (≈58,000 EUR) installed, far less than rebuilding masonry blocks from scratch.
- Monthly upkeep
Automated pods cost roughly 1,800 lei/month in consumables and maintenance, so expect sensors, soap, and dryers to be stocked.
- Portable coverage
City Hall still rents 20 Toi Toi units (73,600 lei for eight months) to cover festivals, trailheads, and work zones without utilities.
Smart automated toilets
These stainless pods are fully accessible—doors open via touch-free buttons, sinks and dryers respond to sensors, the bowl and floor self-clean after each use, and panic buttons release the door even during power cuts. The first six pods cover Piața Sf. Ioan, the Uranus promenade, Parcul Trandafirilor, Parcul Tractorul, Livada Poștei, and Scuarul Berzei; the 2024 wave added Poiana Brașov (RATBV hub), Lacul Noua, Parcul Triaj, Parcul Hutchinson, zona Gemenii (Zizinului), and Strada Brândușelor, with Parcul Gheorghe Dima and the County Hospital next on the list.
Because the turnkey contract covers installation and servicing, pods remain free to use; the city budgets roughly 1,800 lei per pod each month for cleaning and consumables, so soap, dryers, and sensors stay stocked even on busy weekends.
Classic pay-per-use blocks
City Hall still runs the masonry “cabine publice” dotted around markets, parks, and stations. The municipal tax schedule sets a flat 2 lei entry for the Centru Civic block (the same fee applies to the other staffed toilets), so keep a 1 or 5 lei bill or 50 bani coin at hand for the turnstiles.
The Centru Civic restroom was fully renovated for about 35,000 EUR before the smart-pod rollout and now anchors the network; similar refreshes are underway at Piața Astra, the CFR station, and Sub Tâmpa to keep lights, ventilation, and cash boxes working reliably.
Portable units & major events
Even with permanent pods, Brașov still rents Toi Toi cabins for summer festivals, ski buses, and trailheads without sewer access. The 2025 framework covers 20 ecological toilets delivered wherever municipal crews need them, at a cost of 73,601 lei for eight months of servicing (washing, chemicals, and relocations). Look for the blue cabins at Tampa trail entrances, Noua Lake picnic fields, and large markets like Astra or Bartolomeu.
Events such as Oktoberfest Brașov or the Christmas Market add extra units around Piața Sfatului; expect queues during peak hours but appreciate that the city sanitizes them daily under the contract.
Malls, stations & private stops
When you need wider stalls, baby-changing tables, or showers, step into AFI Brașov, Coresi Shopping Resort, or large-format hypermarkets like Carrefour and Kaufland—each operates free restrooms with attendants on staggered shifts. Train stations (Brașov, Bartolomeu, and the Poiana gondola base) now include accessible stalls after 2023 upgrades, so you can refresh before long transfers.

Planning tips
Bookmark the municipal map layer (search “AllInMap toilets Brașov”) to see user-generated pins for every restroom category. The layer updates daily and helps you confirm whether a pod is online before you set out.
Keep a 2 lei coin or small bill for classic blocks, and carry tissues in case attendants restock on the half hour. For smart pods, remember that the door reopens automatically after 15 minutes—helpful for safety but worth noting if you need more time with children.
Hours, closures, and new pod locations are posted on Primăria Brașov’s dedicated smart-toilet page. Check it before festivals or mountain hikes so you’re not caught without facilities when maintenance crews rotate pods.
