Brașov has two big malls, both open every day from 10:00 to 22:00: AFI Brașov (Bd. 15 Noiembrie 78), five minutes by bus or about 25–30 minutes on foot from the Old Town, and Coresi Shopping Resort (Str. Zaharia Stancu 1), the one with the most shops, 16 minutes from Livada Poștei on bus 2 or 2B. Each has a hypermarket (Carrefour at AFI, Auchan at Coresi), a food court and an 8-screen cinema. Closer still, the Star department store on Str. Nicolae Bălcescu is 12 minutes’ walk from Piața Sfatului, while Unirea Shopping Center by the train station is being renovated. Hours, shops and buses below were checked on 10 October 2026.

Getting to AFI Brașov

  • By bus from the Old Town: from Livada Poștei take bus 1, 4 (towards the station), 6, 17, 31, 34 or 34B for three stops to Hidro A, next to the mall. The ride takes about 5 minutes, and line 1 alone runs every 9–17 minutes on weekdays (RATBV line 1).
  • Back to the Old Town: these lines take a different street on the way back, so catch them at Liceul Meșotă on Bd. Mihail Kogălniceanu, about 500 m north of the mall.
  • From the train station: bus 32 or 35 from Terminal Gară to Hidro A, or a 1.7 km walk (about 25 minutes).
  • On foot from Piața Sfatului: 2.1 km, 25–30 minutes.

A single ticket costs 5 lei for 90 minutes and RATBV city buses are free on Fridays (fares, Vinerea Verde). Our guide to getting around Brașov explains tickets, apps and taxis.

The car park is underground, with the entrance and the parking office on Str. N. D. Cocea. Under the rules in force since 1 June 2025 (AFI parking rules):

Coresi Shopping Resort: the biggest choice

Address: Str. Zaharia Stancu 1 (map) · Hours: shopping gallery Monday to Sunday 10:00–22:00; Auchan 07:00–22:00; the shops in Street Coresi set their own hours (Coresi)

Coresi is in the north-east of the city, about 5 km from Piața Sfatului, on the site of the old Tractorul tractor factory, and it is the centre of the new Coresi district around it. It opened in March 2015 and its directory lists about 175 shops, restaurants and services, more than any other centre in the city; part of them face outwards onto Street Coresi on the car park side. The Auchan hypermarket has 13,800 m² of sales floor, which Coresi calls the largest hypermarket in Transylvania (Coresi).

Cinema One Laserplex has 8 screens with about 1,500 seats, four of them equipped for 3D, and laser projectors (Coresi). Coresi is the better mall for children: besides the TakaPaka play area, the carousel and the mini train, the LEGO Certified Store has a play table, a Pick and Build wall and a Build a Minifigure corner (Coresi). Outside there is a skatepark (used from spring to late autumn), a pump track with three tracks of different difficulty and courts for football, basketball and handball; the info desk lends balls and table-tennis bats, as well as pushchairs (outdoor areas, facilities).

Getting to Coresi

  • By bus from the Old Town: bus 2 or 2B from Livada Poștei to the Coresi stop takes about 16 minutes. Between them the two lines run two to four times an hour on weekdays and about twice an hour at weekends (RATBV line 2, timetable valid from 10 October 2026). The same lines take you back.
  • From the train station: 1.8 km, about 25 minutes on foot.
  • By taxi or Bolt: about 10 minutes from the centre; see getting around Brașov for prices.

Parking at Coresi

Coresi has an open-air car park around the mall with about 2,400 spaces (Coresi). Unlike AFI, it publishes no parking tariff or time limit. There is an electric-car charging station; the activation card is handed out at the info desk.

At one of the entrances stands an IAR-22, the first tractor built in Romania, a reminder of the factory that stood here.

Star: the department store by the Old Town

Address: Str. Nicolae Bălcescu 62 (map) · Hours: Monday to Saturday 10:00–20:00, Sunday 10:00–18:00 (Star Brașov)

Star is a department store on four floors and a basement where Strada Republicii meets Strada Nicolae Bălcescu, about 12 minutes’ walk from Piața Sfatului. It is small, with a little over 20 brands, but it is the only shopping centre a short walk from the Old Town, and its first floor is good for mountain gear. Floor by floor, from Star’s directory:

  • Basement: Carrefour Market supermarket.
  • Ground floor: shoes and bags at Mamam, KitchenShop, eGentleman, jewellery and gift shops, Chocolatist, the Vivo Fusion Food Bar and a currency exchange next to the escalators.
  • First floor: outdoor and ski gear at All Mountain (The North Face, Patagonia, Atomic, Scott), Suma Shop and Rossignol, plus Mamam’s women’s clothes.
  • Second floor: AMAN menswear and AMANÉE womenswear.
  • Third floor: the Dr. Fit gym and Lume Lounge.

Star’s own car park has 52 spaces: the first 30 minutes are free, then 3 lei per 15 minutes from 08:00 to 20:00 and 3 lei per 30 minutes from 20:00 to midnight (Star parking). Right next door, Piața Star is the food market closest to the Old Town; see our guide to Brașov’s farmers’ markets.

Unirea Shopping Center: being renovated

Unirea Shopping Center, next to Brașov train station.

The large grey building next to the train station is Unirea Shopping Center, about 16,000 m². In June 2025 its owners hired the property firm Colliers to turn it into a “multifunctional urban space”. At that point it housed only two gyms and a restaurant-lounge on the top floor, and the reopening was estimated for late 2026 or early 2027 (Biz Brașov, 30 June 2025). Don’t plan a shopping trip around it for now: from the station, AFI is four stops away on bus 32 or 35.

Other shopping centres

Eliana Mall (Str. Bazaltului 2) is a smaller neighbourhood centre in Bartolomeu, on the western edge of the city. For visitors its main draw is the High Jump trampoline park on the first floor, for children from 3 and adults (High Jump). For general shopping, AFI and Coresi have far more.

Shopping in the Old Town

Strada Republicii is the pedestrian street that runs north-east from Piața Sfatului to Star, with café terraces down the middle and shops on both sides, from chain stores such as dm and Cato to pharmacies and clothes shops. Walk it towards the square and the Black Church’s tower sits at the end of the street. Strada Mureșenilor leads from the square’s northern corner to Livada Poștei, where most buses leave.

For things to take home, the malls have a few local options: Cărturești bookshops (at AFI and Coresi) also stock music, films, gifts and toys; there are wine shops in both malls; and the Sergiana shop at Coresi sells meat products made to traditional recipes. For cheese and fresh produce, the markets are better (see the farmers’ markets guide), and in winter the Brașov Christmas market in Piața Sfatului runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

Opening hours on public holidays

The big malls close on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday (Coresi also on 1 January) and shorten their hours on the eve of the big holidays. These are the most recent hours the malls and the local press have published:

Tips

  • Sundays: both malls open all day, 10:00–22:00; Star opens 10:00–18:00.
  • Paying: the mall shops take cards; bring cash for the market stalls.
  • Children under 14 may only enter AFI Brașov with an adult, and pets are allowed in AFI’s common areas but not in the play areas or the food court (AFI visitor rules).
  • Changing money: there are Bridge exchange offices in AFI and Coresi, and an exchange office on the ground floor of Star.
  • Films are usually shown in the original language with Romanian subtitles; children’s films are often dubbed.
  • Rain: the malls work well on a wet afternoon; our guide to Brașov on a rainy day adds museums, pools and cafés. With children, see things to do in Brașov with kids, and for meals away from the food courts, where to eat in Brașov.
