Brașov's mountain location creates a distinctive climate that significantly influences the visitor experience throughout the year. Understanding local weather patterns helps with packing decisions, activity planning, and setting appropriate expectations for your Transylvanian adventure.

The continental mountain climate brings pronounced seasons with genuine winters and pleasant summers. Winter temperatures regularly drop below freezing, with December through February averaging between -5°C and 2°C. Snow commonly blankets the city and surrounding mountains, creating conditions for winter sports while transforming the medieval old town into a picturesque winter scene.

Spring arrives gradually, with March often still seeing snow while April brings warming temperatures and increasing sunshine. May offers comfortable conditions with temperatures typically ranging from 10°C to 20°C. This season brings wildflower blooms to mountain meadows and marks the beginning of optimal hiking conditions.

Summer provides the warmest and most stable weather for outdoor activities. June through August sees temperatures averaging 20°C to 28°C, occasionally reaching higher during heat waves. Afternoon thunderstorms occur regularly in the mountains, making morning starts advisable for hiking and outdoor excursions. Evenings cool pleasantly, perfect for exploring the old town.

Autumn delivers spectacular foliage as deciduous forests covering the surrounding hills transform through yellow, orange, and red phases. September maintains summer-like temperatures, while October cools noticeably. November often brings first snows to higher elevations. The shoulder season offers fewer crowds and magical autumn light for photography.

Microclimates affect conditions at different elevations. Temperatures drop approximately 6°C for every 1,000 meters of altitude gain. Poiana Brașov at 1,030 meters runs cooler than the city at 600 meters, while mountain peaks experience significantly harsher conditions. Weather can change rapidly at altitude—preparation for multiple conditions remains essential.

Our weather coverage provides current conditions, forecasts, and seasonal guidance to help you prepare appropriately for your Brașov visit. From what to pack to optimal timing for specific activities, understanding the weather enhances your experience.
