May is one of the best months to visit Brașov: afternoons average 20°C, nights about 8°C, the frosts are over and the days are long, with sunset after 20:30 from the first week of the month. The catch is rain: May has 11 wet days and the first thunderstorms. In 2027 the month opens with two busy holiday weekends: the Orthodox Easter long weekend (30 April – 3 May), which includes 1 May, and the city’s own festival, Brașov Days, expected on 7–9 May, ending with the Junii parade on Sunday 9 May (expected). Come from mid-May for the same weather with fewer people.
Weather in May
These are the averages for the Brașov-Ghimbav weather station, 2015–2025, from the table in our Brașov weather and seasons guide:
| May | |
|---|---|
| Average high | 20°C (69°F) |
| Average low | 8°C (46°F) |
| Rain | about 75 mm on 11 days |
| Nights below 0°C | none on average |
| Daylight | 14 h 22 min on 1 May, 15 h 29 min on 31 May |
| Sunrise / sunset | 06:04 / 20:26 on 1 May; 05:31 / 21:00 on 31 May |
Sunrise and sunset times are from sunrise-sunset.org.
What that means on the ground: warm, pleasant afternoons and cool evenings, with rain on about one day in three. Showers and the first thunderstorms of the year tend to come in the afternoon, so plan walks and day trips for the morning. The trails dry out during the month, although the higher ridges can still hold old snow. In the mountains it is roughly 6°C colder for every 1,000 m you climb.

Events in May
- Orthodox Easter, 2 May 2027. In 2027 Easter falls late and makes a four-day weekend (Digi24). Good Friday (30 April), Easter Sunday and Easter Monday (3 May) are public holidays, and 1 May falls on the Saturday in between.
- Brașov Days (Zilele Brașovului), expected 7–9 May 2027. Concerts and fairs in Piața Sfatului from Friday to Sunday on the weekend after Orthodox Easter. In 2026 they ran from 17 to 19 April. City Hall publishes the programme a few days before.
- The Junii parade, expected Sunday 9 May 2027. Seven groups of riders from Șchei ride from Piața Unirii, through the Old Town and Piața Sfatului, to Pietrele lui Solomon, where the celebrations go on until evening. City Hall describes it as a tradition held every year on Thomas Sunday, a week after Easter (Brașov City Hall). In 2026 the riders set off at 11:00. It’s free to watch; the route, timings and best viewpoints are in our Junii parade guide.
- General fair in Piața Sfatului. The county’s fair calendar listed one for 22–24 May in 2026 (Brașov County Council, PDF); the 2027 calendar isn’t out yet.
- Public holidays: 1 May (Labour Day), 2 May (Easter Sunday) and 3 May (Easter Monday), plus Good Friday on 30 April (Labour Code, article 139).
Our What’s on in Brașov page lists one-off concerts, opera and theatre for the current month.
What’s open and what’s closed
- Museums: from 1 May the Museum of Urban Civilization and the Ethnography Museum move to summer hours, 10:00–18:00, Wednesday to Sunday. The county museums close on public holidays, so expect them shut on 1, 2 and 3 May.
- Libearty Bear Sanctuary: closed on Easter Sunday (2 May) and on Mondays, which includes Easter Monday; tours run Tuesday to Sunday at 09:45 and 11:00. See our Libearty Bear Sanctuary guide.
- Junii day: the parade route is closed to traffic. In 2026 cars had to be off it from 06:00 and traffic was back to normal at about 18:00, and RAT Brașov ran a special timetable on 13 reinforced lines.
- Summer hours everywhere else: Bran Castle (09:00–19:00, Monday from 12:00, last entry), the Black Church (to 19:00) and Seven Ladders Canyon (daily 10:00–16:00, last entry). The canyon can close at short notice for storms.
- Peleș Castle: open Wednesday to Sunday; closed on Monday and Tuesday.
- Still closed: the high section of the Transfăgărășan, which reopened on 12 June in 2026.
Best things to do in May
- The Junii parade on 9 May. Watch the groups gather in Piața Unirii before 11:00, then follow them up to Pietrele lui Solomon for the afternoon.
- Seven Ladders Canyon, early on a weekday, before the afternoon showers. Our Seven Ladders Canyon guide has the bus 17B timetable.
- Walk from Pietrele lui Solomon to Poiana Brașov on the old road (red stripe, 4.2 km, about 1 h 45), then take bus 20 back for 5 lei. The route is in our walks guide.
- Peleș Castle on a weekday (Wednesday to Friday), with Sinaia about an hour away by train. See our Peleș Castle guide.
- Bran Castle and the Râșnov citadel garden on one bus line; the citadel itself is closed for restoration. Our guide to getting to Bran Castle from Brașov has the details.
- The bears at Libearty, on a morning tour from Tuesday to Sunday.
When the rain sets in, our rainy day guide lists indoor options with prices and hours.
Crowds and prices
May has two very different halves in 2027. The first ten days are among the busiest of the spring: the school spring holiday runs until Tuesday 4 May (Order 3194/2026, Ministry of Education), the Easter and 1 May long weekend runs from 30 April to 3 May, and the Brașov Days and Junii weekend follows on 7–9 May. Our Junii guide recommends booking a room early for that weekend. From about 10 May until the end of the month there are no public holidays and schools are back, so weekdays are calm.
What we can say about prices and booking:
- Peleș admits at most 2,000 visitors a day, so buy timed tickets online for the Easter weekend. Under-18s go free during the school holiday (until 4 May), with a booked ticket.
- Trains fill up before public holidays. Book the Bucharest–Brașov IR and IC trains early for 29 and 30 April and for the return on 3 May; see our Bucharest–Brașov guide.
- Brașov Zoo opens on Mondays during school holidays and on public holidays, so it is open on Easter Monday.
Room rates vary with the date, so compare the Easter and Junii weekends with late May before you book.
What to pack
- Light layers for warm afternoons, and a sweater or fleece for evenings around 8°C.
- A light rain jacket or a small umbrella: it rains on about 11 days.
- Comfortable shoes with grip for the cobbles and the forest paths, which are slippery after rain.
- Sun cream and a hat for the parade and for long walks.
- A warm layer for the mountains, where it is much colder and windier than in town.
