March is the changeover month in Brașov: afternoons reach about 11°C, but frost is still normal on 17 nights and snow falls on about 4 days. It suits travellers who want a quiet Old Town, museums and the last spring skiing at Poiana Brașov, which usually closes in late March (on 29 March in 2026). It’s not yet a month for hiking: the forest paths are muddy, snow lingers on the ridges, and Seven Ladders Canyon may not have reopened. There are no public holidays, and the clocks go forward on Sunday 28 March 2027, so evenings suddenly stay light until about 19:45.

Weather in March

These are the averages for the Brașov-Ghimbav weather station, 2015–2025, from the table in our Brașov weather and seasons guide:

March
Average high11°C (52°F)
Average low−1°C (31°F)
Rain or snowabout 44 mm on 7 days
Days with snowfallabout 4
Nights below 0°Cabout 17
Daylight11 h 10 min on 1 March, 12 h 47 min on 31 March
Sunrise / sunset06:55 / 18:05 on 1 March; 06:59 / 19:45 on 31 March, after the clocks go forward

Sunrise and sunset times are from sunrise-sunset.org.

What that means on the ground: weather that changes fast. A 15°C afternoon can be followed by snow, and the afternoon is usually 11–15°C warmer than the night, so a frosty morning can turn into a mild afternoon. Expect grey days, slush on the forest paths and wet cobbles. March gets almost twice February’s rain and snow: about 44 mm, on 7 days. In the mountains it is roughly 6°C colder for every 1,000 m you climb, so the upper slopes at Poiana can still be wintry when the city feels like spring.

Events in March

  • Mărțișor, 1 March. Romanians give each other a mărțișor, a small token on a red-and-white cord, to welcome spring; the custom is on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list, shared with Bulgaria, Moldova and North Macedonia (UNESCO). Brașov holds a Mărțișor fair in Piața Sfatului around the date: from 27 February to 1 March in 2026 (Brașov County Council fair calendar, PDF).
  • The end of the ski season. Poiana Brașov’s last day was 27 March in 2025 and 29 March in 2026, when more than 90% of the snow on the slopes was artificial (Newsweek România). City Hall announces the closing date; see our guide to skiing near Brașov.
  • Western Easter, 28 March 2027. Catholic and Protestant Easter falls on 28 March this year (Digi24). Romania’s Easter public holidays follow the Orthodox date, which is 2 May in 2027.
  • Clocks go forward at 03:00 on Sunday 28 March 2027, the last Sunday of March under the EU’s summer-time rules (EUR-Lex).
  • Public holidays: none in March, so shops, museums and offices keep their normal hours all month.

Our What’s on in Brașov page lists one-off concerts, opera and theatre for the current month.

What’s open and what’s closed

  • Ski lifts at Poiana Brașov: open until the season ends, usually in the last week of March. Check City Hall’s slope and lift status before you go.
  • Seven Ladders Canyon: its rules close it from December to February, and the site’s FAQ gives April to October as the season. In March, phone the hut on 0746 772 274 before you set out. See our Seven Ladders Canyon guide.
  • Reopening for families: Parc Aventura’s rope courses reopen in March, Wednesday to Sunday, and Brașov Zoo moves to its longer summer hours (09:00–19:00, closed on Mondays). Details are in our guide for families.
  • Still on winter hours until 31 March: the Black Church (Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–18:00, Sunday and Monday 12:00–18:00) and Bran Castle (09:00–18:00, Monday from 12:00, last entry). Both switch to summer hours on 1 April.
  • Peleș Castle: open Wednesday to Sunday; closed on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Libearty Bear Sanctuary: tours Tuesday to Sunday at 09:45 and 11:00; closed on Mondays.
  • Still closed: the high section of the Transfăgărășan, which reopened on 12 June in 2026.

Best things to do in March

  1. The last ski weekends at Poiana Brașov, on soft spring snow. Bus 20 from Livada Poștei costs a normal 5-lei ticket; the upper slopes hold snow longest.
  2. A walk along the walls. Aleea de sub Tâmpa is a flat, paved and lit promenade of about 1 km below the eastern walls, fine even when the trails are muddy. Our walks guide has the route.
  3. Museums and the Black Church in the quiet weeks. The Brașov Visit Ticket covers 12 sites within 90 days; see our museums guide.
  4. The first spring greens at the market. From March the stalls sell wild garlic (leurdă), nettles (urzici) and sorrel; our farmers’ markets guide covers the five city markets.
  5. Bran Castle before the season starts, by bus from Autogara 2. Our guide to getting to Bran Castle from Brașov has the timetable.
  6. Peleș Castle by train, about an hour each way, Wednesday to Sunday; see our Peleș guide.

On a wet or grey day, our rainy day guide lists indoor options with prices and hours.

Crowds and prices

March is one of Brașov’s quietest months. There are no public holidays, and the last school ski weeks end on 7 March 2027; from 8 March every school is back in class until the spring holiday on 24 April (Order 3194/2026, Ministry of Education). Weekdays in the Old Town are calm. The exception is ski weekends while Poiana is open: queues still build on the DN1 on Friday afternoons towards Brașov and on Sunday afternoons back to Bucharest.

What we can say about prices:

  • Half-day skiing is cheaper: at Poiana Brașov a pass from 13:00 cost 150 lei for adults in 2025/26, against 240 lei for a full day.
  • Brașov residents got 50% off the Poiana lifts on Wednesdays in 2025/26.

Room rates vary with the date, so compare a few weekends before you book.

What to pack

  • A warm jacket, hat and gloves for the mornings and evenings, which are often below freezing.
  • Layers you can take off: afternoons can be mild.
  • Waterproof shoes with grip for slush, mud and wet cobbles.
  • A small umbrella or a waterproof jacket.
  • For the mountain, winter kit: the top of Postăvarul (1,799 m) is typically about 8°C colder than the city.
  • If you drive, keep winter tyres on: snow is still possible, and Romanian law requires winter equipment when the road is covered in snow or ice.
